RED MAN STORIES
THE FLAVOR OF AMERICA
If there’s one thing that’s kept Red Man chew a favorite for years, it’s the flavor. Back in 1887, tobacco entrepreneur John W. Pinkerton experimented with tobacco flavors in his home kitchen. Discovering that a dipping process for leaf tobacco made the most flavorful chew, he developed the recipe for Red Man’s unique taste.
To this day, the room where Red Man is crafted is known as “The Kitchen” – and the tobacco leaves used in Red Man chew are “dipped” just like they were over 100 years ago.
STAYING FRESH AFTER 100 YEARS
A fresh-tasting chew has always been Red Man’s commitment. In 1967, Red Man became the first to come in a foil pouch, rather than wax paper, ensuring the freshest chew possible.
1990 marked another milestone of this commitment, when Red Man became the first chew to feature a re-sealable pouch, keeping air out and flavor in. At Red Man, the search for new ways to deliver an even fresher chew is a never-ending process.
THE RED MAN WILL
Red Man chewing tobacco was born in 1904—and almost died before 1906. At the time, the Pinkerton Tobacco Company was controlled by “The Trust,” a monopoly with an iron grip on the tobacco trade. The Trust thought Red Man was a waste of time and suggested that Mr. Pinkerton focus on improving existing chewing tobacco products, like Hot Ball and Buck Shoe.
But Mr. Pinkerton believed in Red Man and set out to prove The Trust wrong. Not only did Red Man survive, it thrived, attracting copycat competitors like Tomahawk chew in 1912. And thanks to folks like you, Red Man chew is still going strong a century later.
EARNING THE NAME RED MAN
When it comes to quality, Red Man puts our money where our mouth is. In our early days, pouches were pulled from the production line and taken directly to the company’s top brass, to ensure each tobacco leaf was deserving of the Red Man name and the label “America’s Best Chew.”
If the chew didn’t pass, it didn’t ship. And while this sometimes cost the company a day’s worth of work, it guaranteed Red Man would always deliver on its promise of bold, satisfying flavor. To this day, no pouch leaves the factory without our guarantee of quality, taste and freshness.
THREE IN A MILLION
Red Man can only be made with the highest-quality tobacco. Such tobacco is rare—but even more rare is the man who knows how to find it.
That’s why for most of the Pinkerton Tobacco Company’s existence, only three men have been trusted with the responsibility for finding Red Man tobacco. Some may call it picky. Others may call it stubborn. But to the men who’ve dedicated their lives to doing this, their commitment to quality chew goes by another name: Red Man.
MODERN WHEEL. TIMELESS TASTE.
During World War II, war rationing reduced the amount of sugar available for making chewing tobacco. Sherwood Pinkerton Jr. discovered a way to sweeten Red Man by using sugar substitutes from natural fruits. His formula remained in production until sugar production returned to normal.
Fifty years later, we launched sugar-free Red Man Silver Blend. This high-quality, sugar-free chew is something we think Mr. Pinkerton would be proud of. After all, it’s made by replacing sugars with sweeteners found naturally in fruit.
